I couldn't sleep after discovering the newspaper article. The discrepancy about my rescuer's appearance haunted me, leaving me with a gnawing suspicion that something wasn't right. Danny had always maintained he was the one who pulled me from the lake that day. But dark hair? A Riverside Industries polo shirt? None of that matched Danny's appearance five years ago.

The next morning, I called in sick to work—something I rarely did—and headed to the newspaper offices downtown. The building was older than I expected, with worn marble floors and the lingering scent of ink and paper.
