"Do you remember any of it?" Frederick asked.

I shook my head, confused.

"Nothing at all?"

I strained, but my memory offered only fractured, embarrassing snippets.

I recalled clinging to his leg... wailing like a heartbroken maniac... proclaiming my decade-long crush to a casino floor... and declaring, rather dramatically, that if he didn't marry me, I might as well perish on the spot.

I buried my face in my hands. Mortifying.

A low chuckle escaped him, rich and warm, vibrating through the quiet car.
