Chapter 10

James couldn't take his eyes off the necklace around Sophia's neck, and Sophia caught him staring.

She felt a little shy. Olivia said James picked this out for Sophia.

Meanwhile, Wesley was trembling with anxiety. That night, he'd arrived too late to disturb Emily, so he handed the gift to the housekeeper at Lakeview Residence, asking her to pass it on to Emily.

To his surprise, the jewelry ended up on Sophia instead.

Wesley glanced at James, feeling like his career was doomed. 'Is this the end for me?' he thought, panic rising in his chest.

I watched as Sophia walked toward James, her cheeks flushed with shyness and joy.

"James," she called out softly.

The Brooks family members came over to greet James, but he didn't even glance their way, his eyes still fixed on the necklace around Sophia's neck.

I watched James gaze at Sophia with such deep affection, and it hit me. Even in death, I'd never get my own blue.

Olivia walked over and linked arms with Sophia. When she saw James staring at the necklace around Sophia's neck, she felt a bit guilty and quickly stepped in front of Sophia, shielding her.

The housekeeper had told her that James had sent a set of jewelry for Emily, so Olivia told the housekeeper to give the jewelry to her instead.

The housekeeper also mentioned that Emily hadn't been back to Lakeview Residence for two months, and Olivia told her not to mention it to James.

'Emily is never good enough for James. Sophia is the one who truly belongs with him,' Olivia thought.

If Sophia had been old enough back then, she would've been the one to marry James. Now, Olivia was determined to make sure Sophia and James ended up together.

I had no clue what Olivia was up to. Quietly, I slipped behind Felix, wishing he would take me away from this suffocating party.

When I saw Felix glance at the Brooks Family Members with obvious dislike, I finally felt a bit of comfort. At least Felix was still looking out for me.

But then a wave of sadness washed over me. Out of everyone here, Felix was probably the only one who had my back.

"Mr. Bennett, where's your wife?" someone called out.

Everyone turned to look, including me.

I recognized her. It was Mrs. Harper. I'd helped her out at a party once before.

Ever since then, she'd always greet me at every event. This time, she probably wanted to say hi, but since she couldn't spot me, she asked James about me instead.

The Harper Family was one of the top families in Riverside City, and they had plenty of business dealings with the Bennett Family.

Mrs. Harper was the one running the show for the Harper Family, and James always treated her with a lot of respect.

She was the only woman in charge among all the elite families in Riverside, and she was as shrewd and capable as any man.

James greeted her politely. "Mrs. Harper, Emily should be on her way. Let me give her a call and check."

Felix and I both turned to look at James, and Felix gave him a mocking look.

James dialed my number, but instead, it was Felix 's phone that started ringing.

I stared at Felix in shock. The ringtone was the nursery rhyme my grandma used to sing to me. I'd kept it all this time.

So that's why my phone hasn't run out of battery after all this time. Turns out Felix 's been using it, I thought.

James looked over too, and he clearly recognized the ringtone.

Felix, holding the gift in one hand, calmly pulled out his phone from his pocket.

When James saw the phone in Felix's hand, his face darkened. 'Why does Felix have Emily's phone?' he wondered.

Olivia spoke up, "Why does Felix have Emily's phone?"
