Chapter 3

I turned and walked back to my room, then curled up beneath the covers.

Later that night, I heard the wheels of a suitcase dragging quietly across the floor.

My parents slipped quietly out the door.

The next morning, I found a note from Mom on the dining table.

It read: [Ninette, Dad and I have to leave town for a few days. Take care of yourself.]

I stared at the note, then opened the fridge out of habit. It was completely empty. My stomach turned cold. It looked like the next few days wouldn't be easy on me.
