Chapter 2
Series 1 Chapter 2
I turned and slipped my phone into my clutch.
"Oh, I was talking to a friend from medical school." I managed a small smile. "She found out her husband was cheating."
"She's filing for divorce. She asked me not to say anything until the papers are served."
"That is a shame for her," he murmured, his tone filled with absolute conviction. "But you never have to worry about that, Sienna. That kind of betrayal will never happen between us."
I looked up at his handsome face and the sincerity in his eyes. It was terrifying how easily he could lie.
"But what if you did betray me?" I asked quietly, keeping my tone conversational. "What punishment would you accept?"
Lorenzo didn't hesitate. His grip on my waist tightened possessively. "If I ever hurt you like that, my punishment should be losing you. Disappear, and let me spend the rest of my life unable to find you. You know I'd rather die than live in a world where I can't have you."
He had no idea that I was going to give him exactly what he asked for.
Before I could respond, the terrace doors opened wider, and a server announced that the anniversary performance was beginning.
Lorenzo took my hand, leading me to the edge of the balcony.
The courtyard lights dimmed. A sudden boom echoed through the grounds, and a massive burst of gold fireworks exploded across the dark night sky.
The sparks shifted and morphed, spelling out my name in brilliant, shimmering letters. The guests below clapped and cheered, praising Lorenzo for his boundless love and devotion to his wife.
I stared at my glowing name, feeling sick.
His phone rang. He pulled it from his pocket with a look of annoyance, but his expression softened when he saw Bianca's name on the screen.
He silenced the call and shoved the phone back into his pocket, turning to me with a perfectly crafted look of regret.
"Sienna, I am so sorry. A critical family emergency just came up at the docks. I have to go handle it immediately."
"Right now?" I asked, playing the part of the understanding wife. "During the party?"
"I promise I will make it up to you," he said, kissing my cheek quickly before turning on his heel and striding away. He was in such a rush that he didn't even look back.
I waited exactly three minutes before leaving the terrace. I slipped out through the side entrance, bypassing the main valet, and got into my own car.
I kept my headlights off until I was through the back gates, following the familiar taillights of Lorenzo's black car.
The drive was short. He didn't go to the docks. He pulled into the parking garage of an upscale high-rise downtown. I parked a safe distance away, watching from the shadows of my front seat.
Lorenzo stepped out of his vehicle just as Bianca rushed out from the elevator lobby. She threw herself into his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck.
I watched my husband catch my sister, holding her tight. I rolled down my window just an inch, the quiet echo of the garage carrying their voices.
"You promised you'd see me tonight," Bianca pouted, her voice echoing clearly. "I was going crazy watching the fireworks you put on for her."
"Hush, Bianca," Lorenzo said, stroking her hair. "You know that is all just for show. As long as you keep our secret, the Donna's position, the power, everything Sienna has right now, it could all be yours one day. You just have to be patient."
I sank back against the leather seat and let the tears come. Even after I looked away, I could still see Lorenzo holding my sister.
I wiped my face, reached for my phone, and called my divorce lawyer.
"Sienna? It is late. Is everything alright?"
"Prepare the divorce papers," I said, my voice completely steady. "I want them ready in three days."
I ended the call and drove back to the estate. Lorenzo's car was already in the driveway. He had brought Bianca home with him.
I headed upstairs with the vow card still in my clutch. In three days, it would go into a gift box with the divorce papers.
As I passed Lorenzo's study, I heard Bianca crying behind the partly open door.
"Lorenzo, I'm nine weeks pregnant."
