Boy or girl didn't matter. Twins would be even better.

We had even picked out names.

But I had been sick as a child, and conceiving was hard for me. For years, nothing happened.

And when I finally did get pregnant with our child, he already belonged to someone else.

My gaze landed on the empty spot by the window.

There, a small, ghostly figure appeared again, its back to me, quietly playing on its own.
