After the trip, Charles came to see me one last time.

He stood at the doorway of my "cell," not bothering to step inside.

He gripped my chin, his expression complicated—cold, annoyed, and something else I couldn't place.

"Once Vivian's better, I'll keep my word and get you the best treatment."

He paused for a moment. "Vivian will be fine, and you will too."

I could tell he didn't believe it himself.

I looked at him—handsome as ever, but cold enough to hurt—and asked quietly, "What if the surgery fails?"
