They really weren't my family. They never kept their promises, their moods swung all over the place, and they believed every rumor that came their way.

Probably, they were scared I would call the police if I got a phone.

I lowered my head, trying to figure out my next move.

I absolutely needed a phone if I wanted to gather any evidence.

Without proof, they could easily pin everything on me at the police station.
