Chapter 1
On the log flume, Chloe Bennett and Lucas Reed traded a look and then tore my poncho off in perfect sync.
I barely had time to grab Chloe's rain hood before a wall of water came down on us.
Chloe screamed, and Lucas pulled her against him and shielded her head.
I was soaked through, and my hair stuck to my face in strings.
The video went up online, and the whole internet laughed at me for being the world's best wingman.
When we lined up for a group photo, Chloe saw it and laughed. "You were the one who pulled my hood off. Now everybody has the wrong idea."
Lucas frowned, too. "Hannah, we came here to have fun. That face of yours is killing the mood."
It had always been like that. Ever since we were kids, the two of them had loved messing with me, and they called it fighting over my attention.
In a game built for three, I was always the one who got hurt.
When we got on the cable car, they rushed to grab the seats next to each other.
Chloe turned around to me. "Hannah, take the next car. I have to keep an eye on him so he doesn't try anything with you."
Lucas objected. "Hannah is my girlfriend. Nothing I do counts as trying anything. I should be watching you before you rub off on her."
I took a step back and shook my head.
"You two go ahead. I'm done playing," I said.
I was out of this game.
*****
I had barely reached the exit when Lucas called.
"Hannah, why aren't you up here yet? Chloe and I have almost covered the whole summit," he said.
I checked the time.
An hour and fifteen minutes had gone by.
That was how long it had taken him to notice I was gone.
"I told you I was done playing."
Lucas sounded lost. "When did you say that?"
Then Chloe's voice came through, annoyed.
"This is your fault for distracting me. I never would have missed it otherwise."
The two of them started bickering and shoving each other around.
I listened for a moment and then hung up.
Back at the hotel, I started packing and video called my mom.
"Mom, I'm coming home tonight," I said.
"You don't want to stay a little longer? Hannah, why are your clothes wet? Go take a shower before you catch a cold."
Something went tight and hot behind my nose.
I remembered how I had come off the log flume dripping, my clothes clinging to me.
I had asked to go back to the hotel and change, and both of them turned me down on the spot.
"Hannah, you want me alone with Lucas for half an hour? I would rather die," Chloe said.
She said it with her whole chest and hooked her arm through mine so I couldn't go.
Lucas rolled his eyes at her.
"You think I want to be alone with you?"
He turned to me and softened his voice. "Hannah, let's go look at the view. The wind up there will dry you off."
My shoes were full of water, and every step left a wet print.
Nothing was going to dry.
The damp had crawled into my chest too, and no wind was reaching that.
I forced a smile for my mom. "I'm tired, so I stopped early. I'll shower in a minute."
After my shower, someone knocked at the door.
It was a hotel attendant.
"Excuse me, is Mr. Reed here?" he asked.
I pointed at the room next door.
But Lucas walked out of Chloe's room right at that moment.
He saw me and held up the clothes in his hand, uncomfortable about it.
"It started raining out there, so I came back to change.
"Chloe moved my bag into her room to keep tabs on me."
He gave a helpless little smile with no real complaint in it.
I opened my mouth to say something.
Then the will to say it went out of me.
It wasn't the first time anyway.
When we booked the hotel, Lucas and I were supposed to share a room.
Chloe had used the same excuse to split us up.
She said, "You want to room with Hannah, and so do I. To keep it fair, everybody gets their own room.
"Lucas, behave yourself. Don't let me catch you sneaking into Hannah's room."
I looked down and started to close the door.
Something cold hit my cheek.
Lucas had pressed a chilled water bottle against my face, and he bent down to meet my eyes.
"Hannah, why are your eyes red?"
He set his chin on top of my head, and there was a sulk in his voice.
"You barely said a word to me today."
So I was the one who hadn't been talking.
He was the one who never listened.
I had been planning that graduation trip for a long time.
My notes on it filled several sheets of paper.
Ever since we were kids, every trip the three of us took had left me feeling shut out.
This time, I had wanted to go somewhere with Lucas, only the two of us.
But for all the reminding I did, I opened the car door on the day we left and found Chloe already in the passenger seat.
"Nice, Hannah. If Lucas hadn't let it slip, I never would have known you two were sneaking off without me," she said.
She put on an offended face. "I don't care. I'm coming."
Every time I started to say something, Lucas, who was always patient and gentle with me, got pulled away by Chloe.
So it turned into the two of them horsing around while I trailed behind them in silence.
I pushed Lucas back and only then saw the coffee cup in his other hand.
"What's this?" I asked.
"Oh, the hot one is for Chloe. She got rained on, and I don't want her getting sick and slowing us down.
"You know how she is. If she gets sick, she'll make it my problem for a week."
Lucas shrugged and smiled, then pushed the cold water bottle into my hand.
"This one is yours."
The cold went straight through my palm.
I had already taken a hot shower.
But that soaked-through chill came climbing back anyway.
