Chapter 1
My name was missing from my daughter's wedding program.
I read the cream-colored page twice.
Father of the Bride: Richard Hale.
Mother of the Bride: Vanessa Cole.
There was no Claire Hale anywhere.
For twenty years, I had packed Emily's lunches, sat beside her hospital bed, waited up when she missed curfew, and helped her choose the dress she was wearing today.
Everyone else called me her stepmother.
Emily had called me Mom—until Vanessa came back eight months ago.
I wasn't asking to replace her biological mother. I only wanted my place beside the girl I had raised.
"Mrs. Hale?"
I looked up. The wedding coordinator stood in front of me, holding a box of white rose petals.
"Is something wrong?"
My fingers tightened around the program.
"My name isn't here."
She glanced at the page. Her polite smile faded.
"I'm sure it was an oversight."
"I'm giving a toast at the reception."
At least, I had been told I was.
The coordinator shifted the box against her hip. Behind her, two bridesmaids hurried toward the bridal room. One of them saw me and immediately looked away.
A cold weight settled beneath my ribs.
"Who approved the final program?" I asked.
She hesitated.
"Emily did."
For a moment, the music from inside the church seemed to disappear.
"She saw this version?"
"Yes. On Tuesday."
Tuesday.
Emily and I had spoken that night. She had asked whether I remembered to bring the pearl earrings I had given her for her sixteenth birthday.
She had said nothing about removing my name.
"Maybe you should speak to her after the ceremony," the coordinator said gently. "She's already nervous."
After the ceremony.
That meant she wanted me to sit through the wedding and pretend I hadn't noticed.
I folded the program once.
Then again.
The paper pressed into my palm, but I did not let it go.
"I need to see Emily."
"The bridal room is closed now."
"I'm her mother."
The words came out before I could stop them.
The coordinator's expression changed. Not cruel. Worse.
Uncomfortable.
She lowered her voice.
"Vanessa is with her."
I had spent the morning fixing problems no one else had noticed. I had found Richard's missing cuff links. I had brought Emily's emergency sewing kit. I had called the florist when three centerpieces arrived damaged.
Vanessa had arrived twenty minutes ago in a pale blue dress and walked straight into the bridal room.
No one had stopped her.
From inside the church, the organ began the first notes of the processional.
The coordinator touched my arm.
"We have to seat you now."
She led me through the side doors.
The church was filled with people I had known for years. Neighbors. Church friends. Parents of Emily's old classmates. Several smiled when they saw me, then glanced toward the front as though they were unsure where I belonged.
I followed their eyes.
Richard was seated in the first pew.
Beside him was one chair decorated with an ivory ribbon.
A small card rested against its back.
MOTHER OF THE BRIDE.
Vanessa was sitting in it.
