Chapter 7

I closed my eyes.

The nurse looked like she wanted to say something else, but the doctor called her away.

Now it was just the two of us in the room.

Edward walked over to the bed, his voice hoarse.

"Grace, why didn't you tell someone to call me?" he asked.

I opened my eyes and looked at him.

"I did. Your phone was off," I replied.

He looked stunned, like he'd been caught off guard.

After what felt like forever, he reached out, wanting to touch my face.

And I turned my face away.

His hand froze in midair.
