"You are pregnant," Estelle said. It wasn't a question.

Yolanda crouched on the bathroom floor, one hand gripping the toilet, her mind going completely blank.

It had only been three months since the miscarriage. Her body hadn't fully recovered, so she thought there was no way she could be pregnant again.

She thought back to before the miscarriage. She and Mortimer had been intimate a few times. At that point, she had just gotten pregnant with her first child. The doctor had warned her that sex in early pregnancy could be risky.
