Chapter 4
"Why is your allergic reaction so bad? You're almost dehydrated! Where's your boyfriend? Why are you here all by yourself?" the nurse asked.
Abrielle shook her head, her face pale.
"I don't have anyone," she whispered.
After what felt like forever, Abrielle slumped back in her chair, exhausted, and drifted off to sleep.
When she woke up, she noticed blood had started flowing back into the IV line.
She quickly hit the call button to get the nurse.
The next second, Spencer rushed in, looking anxious.
"Baby!" he shouted.
The nurse quickly disconnected the IV and, seeing the scene, hurriedly snapped at Spencer.
"Are you her boyfriend? Why did you only show up now? The IV line was backing up with blood. She's still having an allergic reaction, and she's so weak. Do you realize you almost got her in real danger?" the nurse said.
Spencer was stunned for a moment, then grabbed Abrielle's other hand without hesitation.
"I'm sorry. Something came up, and I rushed over as soon as I could. It's on me. I'll take you home now," he said.
After the nurse left, Spencer tried to help Abrielle up, but she brushed him off, her expression cold.
"Are you upset?" Spencer asked.
He stared at his hand, still feeling the coldness from her rejection, and frowned.
"No," Abrielle said.
Her voice was so calm, it was like she didn't care at all.
"Please, just listen to me. Rosie was hurt worse, so I had to take her to the hospital first. If word got back to the Stewart family, what would they think of me?" Spencer said.
"Besides, I didn't even know you were allergic..." he added.
Abrielle suddenly smiled, but it was just a hollow expression. Her eyes stayed cold and distant.
"Spencer, you care so much about what the Stewart family thinks of you, but do you even care about what I think?" she asked.
"We've been together for seven years. I remember every single thing you like and dislike about food. Every time we went out to eat, you'd always remind the waiter not to bring anything with fish.
"So why is it that the moment Rosie came back, you just forgot all of that?" she said, her voice calm but with a trace of disappointment.
'Is it because you've already given your love to someone else? Your heart's so small, it can only hold one person, and it's not me,' Abrielle thought.
Abrielle just felt utterly drained, too tired to keep exposing his lies and too tired to keep going in circles with him.
If two people couldn't even have the most basic trust, what was the point of being together? It was just so draining.
"It's not like that, baby. Hear me out. I really just forgot for a moment..." Spencer's voice wavered.
He reached out, trying to grab her wrist, but the instant he touched her, Abrielle's words hit him, and he snatched his hand back as if scalded.
"If I'm not mistaken, Rosie should still be resting at the hospital, right? What are you going to say if she sees you getting all tangled up with me?" Abrielle's tone was cold and biting.
Abrielle looked at the complicated expression on Spencer's face and the way he quietly withdrew his hand, then let out a cold, mocking laugh.
"There's no need to explain anything to me. Let's just leave it at that," she said.
As he watched her walk away, all the words he wanted to say got stuck in his throat. He couldn't utter a single syllable, just stood there, helpless, as she disappeared from his sight.
That night, Spencer didn't come home.
Abrielle figured he'd be staying at the hospital with Rosie, so she didn't even leave a light on for him.
Early the next morning, right after she woke up, Abrielle got a call from the Walker family's butler.
Today was the Walker family's big family party, and Annie had personally invited her to come over, just as Spencer's friend.
For seven years, Annie had always looked down on her and never once invited her to any of these gatherings. She was certain Rosie would be there this time.
It was obvious Annie just wanted her to see Spencer choose someone else right in front of her, so she'd finally give up on him for good.
Since Annie didn't trust her, Abrielle was determined to prove she was worth every cent of that 30 million dollars, and she'd make sure Annie had nothing to complain about.
Abrielle chose a simple black dress that perfectly showed off her figure, pairing it with a simple pearl necklace. She looked quietly elegant and refined.
Holding a box, she stepped inside and immediately saw Annie seated in the middle, with Spencer and Rosie sitting on either side of her.
Abrielle ignored the intense stare Spencer shot her and slowly made her way over to Annie.
"Annie, I heard your birthday is just around the corner. I picked out something special for you," she said.
Annie shot her a look full of disdain, clearly thinking Abrielle couldn't possibly bring anything worth her time. The box looked so light, probably just some cheap trinket inside, nothing special at all.
Afraid Abrielle and Annie would start another argument, Spencer gave a quick snap of his fingers, motioning for the butler to bring over a box.
"Mom, Abrielle was just messing with you earlier. This is the real gift she picked out for you. She wanted it to be a surprise," Spencer said.
