Chapter 2
Edward let out a miserable scream, was sent flying a few feet, and spat out two bloodied teeth along with a mouthful of blood.
"What crap," Matthew snorted, his sword flashing out of its scabbard with a cold ring.
"The Sinclair family's military code is strict—anyone who acts out after drinking gets executed on the spot.
"Since you can't control yourself, Lord Everly, maybe I should just cut it off for you. That way, you'll never cause trouble again."
Edward clutched his swollen face, so scared that he looked like his soul had left his body.
He was nothing but a spoiled rich kid, wasting his days in the capital. He'd never faced anything this terrifying in his life.
Chloe, who'd been huddled in the corner of the bed, was too frightened to even cry. She wrapped herself in the blankets, petrified that Matthew's blade might come for her next.
"Don't kill me! Please!" Edward cried, scrambling backward in terror.
All that swagger from before was gone. Now, he was just a quivering wreck.
"Amy! Come on, Amy, help me out here! We just got married. Doesn't that count for something?" Edward pleaded.
"Yesterday was our wedding! I'm your husband, remember?"
I stood over him, my gaze cold and utterly devoid of warmth.
"Husband?" I said, my voice icy.
"Edward, have you forgotten? You begged outside our gate for three days and nights, begging for this marriage.
"You said we'd be together for a lifetime.
"You promised you'd treat me like a treasure.
"And what did you actually do?"
I pointed at the rumpled bed, my voice cold as ice, sharp as a blade.
"On our wedding night, you left me all alone in the bridal chamber, while you snuck off to this shabby guest room to sleep with your cousin.
"When I caught you, you didn't admit your mistake. You just tried to snatch my belongings and even raised your hand against me.
"Is this the so-called rules of the Everly family? Is this the honor of Lord Everly?"
Edward's eyes flickered, still scrambling for excuses. "I couldn't help it... Chloe's always been so delicate, and she's admired me for years. She was crying her heart out last night. I just wanted to comfort her..."
I shot him a mocking look. "Oh, so your idea of comfort is taking her to bed?"
"What a creative way to comfort someone, huh?
"Since you're so devoted to your precious cousin, fine."
I turned to the housekeeper behind me and gave a crisp order.
"Bring me paper and pen.
"Today, I will make it easy for you two pitiful lovebirds.
"I'll draft the divorce agreement right now."
Edward's face went from shock to terror the instant he heard me say "divorce agreement".
As a lord, being cast aside by his wife was humiliating.
If people found out he'd been kicked to the curb by his wife right after the wedding, the Everlys' reputation would be trashed. He'd never be able to show his face in the capital's high society again.
"Absolutely not! Amy, you can't do that!" Edward yelled, scrambling to his feet, his bravado barely masking his panic.
"I already said sorry. What gives you the right to do that to me? I'm a lord, and you're just a woman!"
Matthew's blade moved forward another inch, the tip hovering right at Edward's throat.
The icy blade made Edward go silent in an instant.
Matthew said with a lazy sneer, "You're just an empty lord living off your ancestors. Think you can act tough in front of the Sinclair family?
"If my sister wants to divorce someone, she can do it. Nobody gets in her way.
"You got a problem with that?
"Or are you itching for my men to teach you a lesson?"
