Chapter 5

Before the operating room doors closed, Edward sent one last message. [Don't be mad. I'll be there with you at the hospital.]

The anesthesia slowly took effect, and I quickly lost all feeling below my waist. But on the monitor, the numbers for the baby's heart rate were plummeting.

The doctor's voice suddenly grew tense. "Quick. The baby's heart rate is about to flatline. Get the baby out immediately."

Three minutes later, the baby was brought out. But the cry everyone was waiting for never came in the operating room.
