Chapter 5
The phone emitted a soft sound in the dead night, and that anonymous email only had one line: "Do not believe the man sleeping next to you, if you want to know what truly happened five years ago."
I could not sleep anymore, so I got up after Julian fell into a deep sleep, and I tracked down a name step by step following an old case number attached to the email:
Nathan Reed.
This name was like a lightning bolt, instantly piercing through my spine.
He was the only lawyer who dared to question the procedure in that investigation five years ago, but he vanished from the face of the earth three days later.
I ignored the sleeping Julian beside me and booked the earliest private itinerary overnight.
When I pushed open the heavy mahogany door of Nathan's office, he was standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window.
Before coming, I had prepared to retell my discoveries and my defenses to gain someone's trust.
However, he walked behind the desk and did not even ask why I came.
"You took longer than I expected."
He paused for a moment, and his voice was low and cold: "You are five years later than I expected."
I froze in place completely. He did not ask whether I leaked the secret five years ago, did not let me defend myself, and did not even offer a trace of polite greeting. He just opened the drawer.
He pushed over a thick file.
I reached out my hand tremblingly, and my fingertips stayed on that rough cover. There was a shocking line of English text:
CLAIRE WHITMORE — POSSIBLE FRAME-UP
I stared at those words, and my vision blurred instantly:
Five years ago, everyone wanted to tear me apart when I was pushed to the trial stand; my arrogant grandfather personally cut off all my supplies, and I begged my mother in the empty hallway, only to get her cold sentence—"Do not call me mother anymore."
At that time, everyone called me a traitor. Only Julian took off his suit jacket on that rainy night, covered my head tightly, and told me he would protect me forever.
But now, this stranger told me I was the victim.
I suddenly raised my head.
"Did you know five years ago?"
Nathan looked at me deeply.
"I know more than you imagine."
