When my husband, Arthur Baxter, woke up after the car accident, he didn't call my name. He gripped the bed railing, pale-faced, and asked, "Where's Callie?" I held our daughter, Ella Baxter, and stayed by his bedside for three days and nights. As soon as Ella saw Arthur open his eyes, her face lit up, and she hurried over, calling out in her sweet little voice, "Daddy." The next second, Arthur jerked back as if he'd seen something disgusting. "Don't touch me." He frowned at me, his eyes filled with unfamiliarity and annoyance. "Who are you? Whose kid is this?" The doctor said Arthur had selective amnesia. Before I could cry, half an hour later, I overheard him laughing with his mom in the fire escape behind the hospital wing. Arthur said, "Faking amnesia is a lot more decent than admitting I cheated. "As soon as she gives me the fund authorization, I'll divorce her right away." Suddenly, I wasn't sad anymore. I wiped my tears and headed back to the hospital room. Callie Dawson was sitting by Arthur's bedside, her eyes red, looking like a wronged ex-lover. I walked over, took off my wedding ring in front of everyone, and slipped it into her hand. I smiled gently. "Since he only remembers you, from today on, you can take my place as Mrs. Baxter."
