At two in the morning, Darryl Farrell's call woke me from a deep sleep. His voice was low, hoarse, and tinged with a hint of panic. "Rosalie, something's happened." I froze. "Aren't you on a business trip? What's going on?" There was a long pause, like he was trying to find the right words. "Bella... Bella's pregnant. Eight months." The world seemed to shatter in my mind. "You two?" "No," he hurried to explain, "We've never been together." Before I could even exhale in relief, he continued, "The doctor just called. She collapsed. The emergency contact she left in her phone was me. She's in the ER now." By the time I arrived, the doctor had just come out. Thankfully, there was no immediate danger. "The baby's fine for now. Initial tests show the fainting was due to malnutrition." Darryl leaned against the wall, his voice low and strained, like something was caught in his throat. "She did something stupid. She used my sperm." I spun around, shock freezing me in place. "What?" "Remember that joint study we did at Uniham a few years ago? We all left samples for genetic screening... she took mine. She said she didn't want money or status. She just wanted to give me a child. She knew you couldn't have kids. She knew that I... I really wanted a child." My mind was buzzing, unsure if I should be furious or just completely baffled. This was the deepest, quietest crack in our marriage, one we'd silently agreed never to talk about. And now, someone else had come along, stepping into this void in the most unexpected, chaotic way.
