Chapter 1
During the Black Friday live stream promotion, my husband Ethan Anderson's ditzy secretary, Amelia Grant, eagerly volunteered herself.
"Mr. Anderson, just trust me. I promise I'll nail it this time," she said, her voice full of confidence.
Ethan, charmed by her enthusiasm, insisted she take control of the live stream's operations.
The hosts were pumped, each one practically frothing at the mouth to push their products.
The clock struck midnight. All the hosts, in perfect synchronicity, yelled out, "It's live!"
One second later, a product originally priced at 300 bucks was sold one million times at the insane price of three dollars.
I knew it right then. My husband's company was finished.
*****
In my old life, I did everything I could to stop Amelia from screwing around in the control room. I ignored my husband's warnings, even his threats, and kicked her out myself.
The live-stream sales went through the roof. But instead of thanking me, Ethan exploded and demanded a divorce.
"This was supposed to be a training opportunity for new talent! You just had to butt in!" he shouted.
I tried to explain that I saw Amelia change the price to three, but Ethan pushed me down to the floor.
The hosts all testified for me, showing screenshots and records of all the times Amelia had screwed up the listings and prices on the control panel before.
Once the other directors saw the evidence, they demanded the legal team to get the money back.
Amelia, unable to repay her one million debt, jumped off the company rooftop.
To get revenge for her, my husband locked me in the company's cold storage and left me to freeze to death.
"Vivian!" he shouted. "It's just three million! You didn't blink an eye when you handed out one million in subsidies to the fans! Why are you so harsh on Amelia?
"Since you care so much about those products, I'll let you die with them. Let's see how anyone will buy products that are buried with the dead!"
I froze to death in that cold storage, my body turning purple.
Before I died, I swore that if I ever got another chance, I would never stop Amelia from messing with the prices again.
And then, when I opened my eyes, I was back at the Black Friday live stream event.
"Vivian, Mr. Anderson said that Amelia must be allowed in the control center! This Black Friday is going to bring in billions in traffic, so you need to make the call and let her in," one of my colleagues said.
I couldn't help but tremble for a moment when I saw Amelia peering curiously through the glass door.
After locking eyes with me, Amelia opened the glass door with a wide grin.
"Vivian, I knew you wouldn't ignore Mr. Anderson's orders. He said that if I can handle the control center well this time, my resume will look great, and I'll get promoted and get a raise," she said brightly.
Before I could say a word, Amelia held up her phone, already on a video call.
"Mr. Anderson, see, Vivian isn't as heartless as you said! She might be a bit slow, but she'll definitely try her best," she said sweetly.
My colleagues exchanged uncomfortable looks.
Before anyone could stop her, Amelia flipped the phone around, showing a furious Ethan on the other side of the screen.
"Vivian, stop with your little attempts to take credit! This Black Friday is a must for giving the new recruits a chance," he barked.
I stayed silent, but Amelia grinned and leaned closer to the screen, acting all cute.
"Mr. Anderson, people like us little newbies need more opportunities," she said. "Vivian might always try to suppress new talent, but with you in charge, I'm sure she won't do that this time."
Even the rookie anchors who weren't on the schedule nodded in agreement. "Yeah, Vivian, Mr. Anderson said we should give the newbies a shot. Black Friday is a great time to rake in the money and boost performance.
"You can't just give all the opportunities to the people you've been training!"
Amelia playfully stuck her tongue out at the screen, and almost immediately, a work notification popped up on everyone's phones.
[Update: Black Friday Live Stream Host Changes]
Out of the 27 live stream rooms, only five old anchors were left in mine.
The rookie anchors cheered in excitement, and as they ran into the live stream rooms, they flashed Amelia a big heart sign.
Amelia squeezed past her colleagues, hunching her shoulders as she sat down in front of the control center screen.
I clenched my fists but stayed silent, holding back my anger.
I couldn't wait to see how they'd be laughing when billions in profit turned into billions in losses.
