I was the vampire my mother kept locked in a lightless room. She told me I had a fatal photosensitivity. One touch of sunlight, and I'd crumble to ash. For my sake, she boarded up every window in the house and kept heavy black curtains drawn twenty-four hours a day. The world outside became nothing more than a distant rumor. To keep me from going insane with loneliness, she forced my older sister Sophie to drop out of school and stay home with me in the eternal dark. Sophie couldn't take it anymore. One day, she cracked open a curtain, just a sliver. A single blade of sunlight sliced through the gloom. Mom exploded into the room like a wild animal, slamming the curtain shut with a scream. "You stupid girl! Do you want to murder your sister?!" Sophie whipped around, her eyes burning with years of pent-up hatred as she glared straight at me. "You fucking monster! My entire life is ruined because of you!" Her words cut deeper than any sunlight ever could. I felt guilty. So guilty that when Sophie finally snapped and threw me out of the house, I didn't beg. I didn't knock. I didn't scream for help. I just lay there on the cold front steps, waiting for dawn. Let the sun rise. Let it burn me away. If I died, Sophie could finally step into the light again. Mom could stop crying every night. The sky brightened. Golden rays spilled over the horizon and washed across my skin. I waited for the agony. For the flames. For the end. But nothing happened. Instead, the sunlight felt warm. Comforting. Like a long-lost embrace. I didn't turn to ash. I didn't even flinch. So who the hell was the real monster here?
