Chapter 4

I woke inside an ambulance with the front of my wedding dress cut open.

A paramedic pressed cold pads against my chest. The monitor above him showed a pattern of green lines that rose and fell too quickly.

Adrian sat beside the stretcher.

He still had my blood on his white shirt cuff.

"Where is Richard?" I asked.

"Not in this ambulance."

"My medicine--"

"The hospital will decide what you need."

The paramedic asked when I had taken my last dose. I told him it had been the night before.
