Chapter 3
Judging by the time, Zachary should be back soon.
I spent two hours this morning perfecting that innocent, no-makeup look. Then I slipped into my new dress.
Melissa was a natural beauty to begin with. All dressed up like this, she totally had that rich girl vibe.
Just as I finished getting ready, the door burst open with a deafening bang.
Zachary was fuming at the doorway, his face dark with rage. "Who the hell do you think you are? How dare you stay in Wendy's room?"
I pretended to be terrified, giving him my best doe-eyed look, eyes wide and shimmering with fear as I glanced at him.
"Zachary, don't be mad, okay? You're scaring me," I whimpered.
Zachary's eyes instantly widened.
Men would be men. They were all about appearances.
With Wendy being the star of the show, why would Zachary ever bother looking at someone as plain as me?
But what if his real sister turned out to be a hidden gem too?
Zachary stared in shock. "Melissa?"
I nodded timidly. "Zachary, Mom and Dad were just worried Wendy might do something stupid again, so they had me stay here.
"Did you come back to get some clothes for her? I figured you might not know what a girl needs, so I packed everything up for you already."
As I said that, I pushed the little suitcase over to you.
Zachary scratched his head, avoiding my gaze. "Uh... thanks. I'm gonna go change first."
I watched as Zachary practically bolted from the room.
I gave a small smile, lifted the hem of my dress, and headed downstairs to turn on the TV.
Zachary was about to leave with the suitcase when he noticed a soccer match playing on the TV.
He was taken aback. "Wait, you actually understand soccer?"
Acting like you totally got what guys were into? That was just another flavor of being a scheming bitch girl.
If you wanted to get someone to like you, you gotta start with what they were interested in.
I gave him a sunny smile. "I missed last night's game because I didn't want to bother Mom and Dad, so I thought I'd just watch the replay today.
"Zachary, are you done getting ready? Go hang out with Wendy."
Zachary couldn't resist and flopped down on the couch next to me, totally drawn in by the game. "Wendy's not in any real trouble, let me just finish watching the match first."
The maid got the hint and brought Zachary some coffee, then sliced up some fruit for me.
We were just hanging out, watching the game and chatting, when right as the match was wrapping up, Zachary's phone started ringing.
"Zachary, where are you? I'm dying of boredom over here!" Wendy whined. Her voice was all soft and pouty over the phone.
Zachary barely glanced at his phone. "Something came up, I'll head over in a bit."
Just then, our favorite team scored a goal.
I shouted excitedly, "Zachary, we scored."
Zachary pumped his fist in the air, totally hyped.
Wendy totally freaked out on the phone. "Zachary, are you with that bitch right now? If you don't get over here this instant, I swear I'll kill myself. Just watch me."
Zachary's brows knitted together. "Okay, okay. I'm coming right now."
After hanging up, Zachary lingered for a moment, stealing one last look at the game.
I reassured him with a gentle smile. "Zachary, don't be upset with Wendy. Most girls aren't really into soccer anyway.
"There's still about half an hour left. You can finish watching it on your phone while you're on your way."
Watching on your phone just wasn't nearly as fun as catching it on TV.
Zachary nodded with a sigh, then reluctantly dragged the suitcase out. He hadn't even been gone for long when the doorbell rang.
Checking the security camera, I saw a seriously good-looking guy standing outside.
Just one look at his designer clothes and I could tell he was loaded. Definitely another rich kid.
I smoothed down my hair, opened the door, and flashed him a sweet smile. "Who are you looking for?"
The guy looked all cool and aloof, but his ears suddenly turned red. "I'm here for Zachary."
I batted my lashes at him. "Looking for my brother? He just went to the hospital."
He studied me for a moment. "So you're Zachary's actual sister, Melissa?"
"Yeah." I gave a cute little nod.
The guy curved his lips in a half-smile. "Let Zachary know, Taylor, stopped by."
I pouted, giving him my best puppy-eyed look. "Sorry, I don't have his number on me."
Taylor sighed lightly. "No worries, I'll reach out to him myself."
Just as he was about to leave, Taylor asked, "Are you a freshman at Star High School too?"
I've heard of Star High School before.
