I lifted the lid. Inside lay a stack of letters, each one folded with care.

I had sent my people to "borrow" them from Evelyn's quarters just days ago.

I unfolded the first one and read aloud. "'Dear Phil, the moon is so beautiful tonight, and Eve cannot sleep for thinking of you.'"

I picked up another. "'Phil, I adore your thoroughbred. If you gave her to me, we could ride together across the hills.'"
