Helena stared at me, her eyes clouded with anguish and inner turmoil.

Then, ever so slowly, she turned her head toward Richard.

Richard caught her gaze. He stumbled back a step, disbelief written across his face. "Your Highness. You cannot be serious..."

Helena's lips quivered. "Richard. For the Empire."

"No! I refuse." Richard's voice cracked. "I will never grovel before a monster. Your Highness, open your eyes. She has bewitched you."

Helena shut her eyes, tears streaking down her cheeks. "We have no choice left.
