At lunch, Ryan pressed the notebook into my hand.

He said, "Nathan, I don't think I'm gonna make it through today. My father's number is written inside. If you make it out, please call him and give him this notebook.

"Just tell him I let him down, and won't be there to look after him anymore."

My eyes were brimming with tears, and for a moment, I was hit with a wave of sadness.

I even felt guilty for trying to play smart.
