Chapter 2
Orson had it coming for all the terrible things he did. But it shouldn't have been me who killed him.
Now, I'd already warned him to leave the studio.
But the troublemaking relatives hauled me up to the hospital rooftop and held me hostage.
And now, there were still so many people livestreaming.
Everyone in the hospital could back me up.
I'd really like to know how I'm supposed to message him now, in this life. And just how could I have possibly killed him.
Just as the rowdy family members were being talked down by the police, drawing their attention away, his grip unconsciously tightened around me.
I seized the moment to save myself and knocked the dagger out of his hand.
The police rushed in and subdued him right away. But he shoved me hard, sending me tumbling off the rooftop.
Good thing the second-floor awning caught me on the way down. Thanks to that, I got out alive, just messed up my arm a bit.
As I lay on the stretcher, the livestreamers started giving me thumbs-ups.
They couldn't help but praise, "What a great doctor."
Then came a flood of well-wishes and concern, which honestly just made me want to laugh.
Back in my last life, I'd worked the whole night shift and then pitched in again that morning.
By the time I got home, I was completely wiped out. I passed out and slept straight from 2 PM to 5 PM before finally coming to.
As soon as I woke up, the cops showed up out of nowhere and slapped the cuffs on me.
It didn't matter how many medals and certificates I waved in their faces, or how much the hospital spoke up for me.
The furious netizens were still out for blood, flooding the internet with calls to cancel me.
When faced with the cold, hard evidence from the surveillance cameras, all my glory and achievements didn't stand a chance.
I couldn't account for what I was doing from 3 to 5 PM that afternoon. Not a single shred of evidence showed I was actually home, asleep.
But the elevator cam right outside my apartment caught me heading out at 3 PM.
With all eyes on me, I was rolled straight into the operating room.
There were plenty of witnesses here who could testify for me.
There was no way things would go down like they did in my previous life.
By the time the surgery wrapped up, it was already 5:20 PM.
When I was wheeled out of the operating room, my arm was in a cast, but I finally felt a weight off my shoulders.
I grabbed my phone and called my boyfriend, Orson. I just wanted to see how he was doing.
I tried once, twice. He just wouldn't answer. My heart just ached.
In my previous life, I was the one who killed him. In this life, I'd already told him to leave ahead of time.
And there was no way I could've even had the chance to do it this time.
'Did nothing change after all?' I wondered, feeling a wave of helplessness.
After the tenth try, someone finally picked up.
I couldn't stop shaking, my voice trembling as I spoke. "Orson?"
There was a heavy sigh on the other end. Then came the reply. "Ms. Jimenez? Something terrible just happened to Mr. Buckley."
My hand went numb, and the phone slipped right out of my grasp, clattering to the floor.
My best friend Bianca burst through the door and caught the moment my phone hit the floor.
She rushed over, scooped up the phone, and wrapped me in a comforting hug.
I never imagined Orson would still get murdered in this life.
I couldn't help but think about those security tapes. 'Was it still me? Did I somehow end up killing him again?'
Just as I was lost in thought, Bianca started laying into me. "Angela, you've got some nerve. Don't you care you could lose your life if you're not careful?
"Everyone else is too scared to step up. Why do you always have to play the hero?"
Suddenly, I snapped back to reality and gave her a smile that was more painful than reassuring.
I had to get involved, because I needed evidence to prove my innocence.
But there was no way I could tell her about being reborn. All I could do was flash her an awkward smile and swear I wouldn't pull something like that again.
For some reason, hearing Bianca chew me out actually felt strangely comforting this time.
Of all people, I never thought she'd be the first one to check on me.
Meanwhile, my parents, always binge-watching videos on their phones, still hadn't bothered to show up.
Even though the hospital higher-ups tried to bury the trending topic about the whole hospital scandal, it totally blew up online before that.
No way they missed it.
