Isaac was freaking out inside, trying hard to hold it together. "I'm fine."

But Evelyn noticed the bruises all over the back of his hand, and her heart tightened. She grabbed his wrist.

She asked, "Isaac, you're hurt. Who did this to you?"

Isaac could hear that Evelyn still cared about him, and that was enough for him.

He scrambled for an excuse, just like he'd done all these years. He always told little white lies to keep her from worrying.
