Chapter 1
It started as a flicker. A low, insistent warmth deep in my belly that I tried to ignore. I shifted on the thin cot, the rough blanket scratching my skin. The heat shelter was always cold, a place designed to be as un-arousing as possible. White walls, white sheets, a smell of bleach meant to crush any omega pheromones before they could bloom. It usually worked. Usually, the suppressants did their job, turning me into a ghost in my own body, a person who went through the motions without ever truly feeling.
But not today.
The flicker became a flame, and then a wildfire. A sheen of sweat broke out across my forehead, and my heart began to hammer against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat of panic.
No.
Not here.
Not now.
I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to will the feeling away, but it was like trying to hold back the heat with my bare hands. The cramping started next, a dull ache that sharpened into a demanding throb between my legs. I knew this feeling. I had dreaded this feeling my entire life.
My suppressants had failed.
The first wave of slick was a horrifyingly intimate betrayal. I felt the warm, unmistakable wetness soak through the thin fabric of my standard-issue pants, and a choked sob escaped my throat. It was the beginning of the end, the signal to every alpha in the vicinity that I was ripe, ready, and completely vulnerable. The bleach smell of the room was being eaten alive by the scent of my own body—sweet, desperate, and terrified.
I had to get somewhere private. My small, assigned room was my only hope. Stumbling to my feet, I clung to the wall, my legs trembling so badly I wasn’t sure they’d hold me. Every step was a battle. The air in the hallway felt thick, charged, and the scent of other omegas, all safely neutral and suppressed, did nothing to mask the storm brewing in me. I finally made it to my door, my hand shaking so badly I could barely get the keycard to swipe. The door hissed shut behind me, and I collapsed against it, gasping for air.
The room was small, just a cot and a tiny window overlooking a grey alley. But it was a fortress. A locked, flimsy fortress. I tore off my damp pants, the fabric clinging to my skin, and crawled onto the cot, curling into a ball. The heat was a living thing now, a monster under my skin, clawing at me. It was a need so profound it was pain. An emptiness that demanded to be filled.
My hands moved on their own, driven by a primal instinct I couldn’t control. I cupped my breasts, my nipples pebbling into tight, aching points that begged for a mouth, for teeth. I pinched one, and a jolt of pure, liquid fire shot straight to my core. I whimpered, the sound foreign and broken. My other hand slid down my stomach, through the damp curls, to find the source of the ache. My folds were swollen, slick, and so sensitive my own touch made me cry out. I circled my clit, my hips bucking, but it was a hollow, frustrating pleasure. It was like trying to put out a forest fire with a teacup of water. It wasn’t a person. It wasn’t an alpha. It wasn’t a knot.
I was lost in a haze of desperation, my own fingers working frantically, uselessly, when it happened.
A scent.
It sliced through the fog of my heat, sharp and clean and utterly dominant. It wasn’t just a smell; it was a presence. Rain on hot pavement, pine needles, and something darker, spicier… something that promised safety and possession and everything my body was screaming for. My head snapped up, my eyes wide. It was coming from outside my door, from the hallway. An alpha. An alpha whose scent was so potent it was seeping through the doorframe, wrapping around me, calling to me.
My body reacted before my mind could catch up. The ache intensified, a fresh gush of slick wetting the cot beneath me. A whine built in my throat, a sound of pure, unadulterated need. I knew I should be scared. I should be scrambling for the lock, for the emergency call button. But all I could do was stare at the door, my entire being focused on the powerful presence on the other side. My heat, my treacherous, traitorous body, didn’t scream ‘danger.’ It screamed ‘finally.’
Then, I heard footsteps. Heavy, steps that stopped right outside my room. The scent intensified, so strong I could almost taste it. I held my breath, my heart lodged in my throat. The doorknob, the one I knew was locked, began to turn with a soft, metallic click.
It wasn’t locked at all. I hadn’t checked. I had collapsed against it, a fool.
The door swung inward, and there he was. A silhouette against the dim hallway light, a mountain of a man whose sheer presence made the small room feel like a cage. His eyes found me in the gloom, and I knew, with a certainty that chilled me to the bone even as my body burned, that my life was about to change forever.
