Dario set his coffee cup down too hard. It rattled against the saucer, and the sound was loud enough that the bartender glanced over.

He made himself smile. "Too much sugar this morning."

The newspaper lay open on the counter in front of him. He did not pick it back up right away. He looked instead at the headline, upside down from where his hand had frozen, and read it again anyway, letter by letter, the way you check a wound to see if it's as bad as it felt.
