Chapter 4

They shower and dress, and Trey makes breakfast, forcing Sylvan to eat a few bites as he fiddles with his laptop or the newspaper.

He circles the table, dropping two cubes of sugar into his coffee and a kiss at his temple.

Sylvan smiles and dissolves the sugar, the edge of his spoon singing against the mug.

Trey unfolds the newspaper with a flourish.

Mrs. Pemberton usually totters downstairs around midmorning; she flutters about clearing dishes and reorganizing their silverware drawer, huffing and scolding and pinching their cheeks until they glow.

Once she has departed, they gather the evidence files…
