Chapter 1
"Sometimes I wish you were my mom."
My sixteen-year-old son said it to my husband's mistress while eating cake in my kitchen.
I stopped in the foyer, my briefcase still in my hand.
Vanessa Cole laughed softly, wiping a speck of chocolate frosting from Tyler's chin. My husband, Connor, was standing right behind her, his hand resting near her shoulder.
He didn't correct our son. He didn't even flinch.
That was the part I remembered later—not Tyler's words, but his father's silence.
I had known about Connor and Vanessa for almost two years. I had stayed because I thought a cold home was better for Tyler than a broken one. Until tonight, I had told myself their affair had nothing to do with my son.
"I thought you were grounded, Tyler," I said, stepping into the light.
The laughter died instantly.
Tyler laid his fork down with a loud clatter. "Here comes the sergeant."
"Tyler," Connor warned lazily, his dark eyes cool. "Vanessa brought the cake over. Tyler was reinstated on the varsity debate team today."
I picked up the mail resting on the kitchen island. "Reinstated? After you used your donor status to erase his suspension?"
Vanessa offered a tight smile. "Evelyn, he's sixteen. Boys at Saint Jude's need room to breathe. Sometimes strict discipline just pushes them away."
"Tyler already has two parents, Vanessa," I said, my gaze fixing on her.
Vanessa flinched, looking up at Connor.
Connor's jaw set. "That's enough, Evelyn. You've been home for five minutes and you're already running this house like a site manager. I spoke with the headmaster. The suspension was cleared."
"You taught him that rules don't apply to him as long as your checkbook is open," I replied.
I looked at Tyler's wrist. A brand-new gold watch glinted under the chandelier.
"Take it off."
Tyler blinked. "What?"
"Grounded means no parties, no car, and no ten-thousand-dollar watches," I said, holding out my hand. "Give it here."
"Aunt Vanessa bought that for me!" Tyler yelled, pulling his arm back. "Dad, tell her!"
"Evelyn, don't be ridiculous," Connor snapped. "It's a gift."
"You already erased the school's consequence, Connor," I said, looking my husband in the eye. "You don't get to erase mine."
Tyler slammed his palms on the marble counter and stood up, his face red.
"At least Dad and Aunt Vanessa care about what makes me happy! You just care about rules! You're never here anyway!"
He snatched the watch off his wrist, shoved it into Vanessa's hands, and walked upstairs, his sneakers heavy on the steps.
When Vanessa left shortly after, Connor poured two fingers of scotch into a glass. "You need to tone it down. Vanessa has connections with the Saint Jude's board that we need for the upcoming Legacy Gala."
"She's teaching our son to resent my boundaries, Connor," I said.
"You've been a Ford for seventeen years, Evelyn, but you still act like you have something to prove," Connor said, setting his glass down hard. "The firm, the name, Riverside—you never learned how to let any of it go."
"You mean I never learned to become dependent on you," I said.
Connor's expression hardened. "I mean you never learned how to be part of this family."
My phone buzzed on the island. A notification from Saint Jude's Academy popped up on the screen:
RSVP Confirmation for Legacy Night Gala: Student Representative Tyler Ford. Family Guest: Vanessa Cole.
I looked down at the screen. A quiet stillness settled over my heart.
My family had already replaced me.
