When I woke up, Edward was sitting by my bed, looking worn and drained. "Lauren, you okay?"

I didn't answer him. I looked at the nurse who was changing my IV. "Excuse me, my baby..."

The nurse gave Edward a quick, awkward glance, as if wondering why I was asking her instead of my own husband. But she still answered, "I'm sorry, ma'am. We couldn't save the baby."

Even though I had already guessed it, my chest still tightened until it went numb, and tears slipped down on their own.
