Chapter 2
I went back to our penthouse, numbly packing up my things, and began making calls to arrange a beautiful burial plot for my mom.
Hours passed before Edward finally bothered to call me back.
His voice was hushed to a whisper. Clearly, he was terrified of waking up the woman sleeping in the next room.
"Are you out of your mind? What the hell is this text about a divorce?" he hissed.
I ground my teeth together, forcing my voice to remain deadpan and steady.
"My mother is dead. Is that a good enough reason for you?
"This is what you called 'barely getting tapped'?"
Edward couldn't believe it.
"What?" he finally asked, genuinely stunned.
A long pause stretched between us. Then, he let out a frustrated sigh.
"She was old. Elderly people get hurt easily. It happens. Try not to be so dramatic about it.
"Since we can't change what happened, shouldn't we just focus on moving forward?
"Oh, by the way. Sienna's mom has been having severe joint pain in her legs. You're the top orthopedic specialist in the city. I'm bringing her by your clinic this afternoon so you can take a look at her."
I couldn't help but laugh in disbelief.
Edward sounded so incredibly nonchalant, as if my mother's death was just an unfortunate inconvenience in his schedule.
That was a human life!
I gritted my teeth, rage boiling inside me.
"Find someone else. I'm busy," I spat.
Edward paused, his voice hardening.
"Seriously? You can't even carve out thirty minutes to look at Sienna's mom? I know for a fact you're not that busy."
I couldn't fathom the sheer audacity of these two people.
My mother had literally just died because he abandoned her, and he still had the nerve to demand I treat his ex-girlfriend's mother.
It made sense. Sienna came first for him, no matter what.
Even her family took precedence over me and my own mother.
My mom's death was just a trivial matter to him.
Why would he ever care about my grief?
When I didn't reply, Edward's tone turned sharply accusatory.
"You're a doctor. Are you really going to abandon a patient in need out of pure spite?"
I took a deep breath.
"My mother is lying in a morgue right now. And you want me to treat Sienna's mother? Let me make this crystal clear, Edward. Go to hell."
I hung up and immediately blocked his number.
My lawyer emailed over the finalized divorce agreement.
After printing, I quickly scrawled my signature and placed the papers on the bedroom vanity.
After five years of marriage, I had accumulated way too much history in this apartment. I packed only what truly mattered, loaded my boxes into the trunk of my car, and drove away.
Next on my list was going back to the hospital to finalize my mom's funeral arrangements.
What I tragically underestimated was just how far Edward would go to appease Sienna.
Edward was the golden boy of the wealthy Harrington family. After college, he became a massive lifestyle vlogger, boasting millions of followers across social media.
The second I stepped out of my car in the hospital parking lot, he was there. He shoved his phone right into my face, actively live-streaming.
"Look at her, guys! This is the so-called 'top doctor' who refuses to treat a patient in agonizing pain just because of a petty personal grudge!" he announced to his audience.
I threw a hand up to shield my face from the camera and shoved him back with my other hand.
"Get the hell out of my face!" I snapped.
It was a light shove, but Edward theatrically threw himself backward, crashing onto the pavement. Sienna shrieked and rushed forward to help him up.
"Dr. Murray! I know you hate me, and I know you don't want to treat my mom, but you can't just violently assault your own husband in public!"
Onlookers and hospital staff stopped in their tracks, whispering and pointing at the scene.
"Isn't that the chief of orthopedics? I had no idea she was like that..."
"Is she really denying people care based on personal drama? That's a huge ethics violation..."
