“Thad,” I said, voice rough with sleep.

He didn’t answer. His grip on the keys tightened until the metal edges must have bitten into his palm. The look on his face was no longer careful. It was dark, controlled only by force, and fixed entirely on the shape of my body under his clothes. I watched the exact moment his chest rose once, sharply, as if he had to remember how to inhale.
