Chapter 4
The next day was Monday.
Connor got up at seven on the dot to make breakfast.
Breakfast was nothing fancy. There was some oatmeal he'd prepped the night before, a few sandwiches that only needed reheating, and some freshly boiled eggs.
I wolfed down my breakfast and headed off to work.
After work, I stopped by the market to pick up some groceries on my way home and cooked dinner.
While we were eating, Connor suddenly said, "I've got an interview tomorrow."
I looked up at him in surprise. "Is it legit?"
Connor had tried looking for jobs before, but as soon as people heard about his disability, they'd politely turn him down.
Connor explained, "It's a new company that is around the corner. It's not big, but the pay's decent. I figured I'd give it a shot."
I nodded. "Yeah, go for it. If it doesn't work out, you can always come back. Besides, you're making pretty good money with those online gigs anyway."
Over the past year, he'd been picking up some freelance work online now and then.
It wasn't as much as he used to make at a regular job, but on average, he was still pulling in several thousand dollars a month.
So, money wasn't really a big concern for us right now.
Connor smiled and nodded. "Alright."
Suddenly remembering how hard it was for him to get around, I added, "I'll take half a day off tomorrow to go with you."
Connor shook his head, looking serious. "Don't bother. If I get the job, I can't have you taking me there every day."
I knew he had his pride. Since I knew he could handle it, I didn't push it.
"Alright, be careful on your way," I said.

Since Connor had to get ready for his interview tomorrow, we didn't go out for a walk after dinner.
He was in the study, going over his materials, while I dug out his old suits and ironed them all.
I was worried he might hit a wall, but the chat comments said the boss at this company was someone who'd really look out for Connor.
That put my mind at ease.
The next morning, we got up together. I helped Connor into a cab I ordered, then hopped on my scooter and headed to work.
Around eleven, Connor texted me that he'd aced the interview.
The boss wanted him to start as soon as possible, and even offered him the highest salary they could.
Connor hadn't been this happy in ages, so I suggested we go out for a nice dinner to celebrate.
We chatted for a bit, but then he suddenly went quiet.
I figured he must've gotten busy, and since I had work to do, I didn't think much of it.
As soon as I got off work, I rushed home.
When I opened the door, I saw Connor sitting in his wheelchair.
He was sitting there with his head down, looking all serious.
I figured he was deep in thought, so I didn't think much of it and ran over to him, all excited.
"Honey!" I called out.
Connor suddenly looked up, his eyes red-rimmed as he locked his gaze on me.
The rage in his eyes was ready to burst out.
I froze, trying to push down my unease, and asked carefully, "Did they change their mind?
"It's okay, we've got enough money. We can take our time and look for something else..."
"Let's break up," Connor cut me off coldly.
