Chapter 4

My recovery came faster than expected.

During that time, Edward cut back on work and showed up every day.

He went with me to each checkup, but he rarely spoke. Whenever our eyes met, I could see the flicker of a troubled conscience in his eyes.

I spent most of those days drifting in and out of sleep. Once, in a hazy half-dream, I felt him sit beside my bed and take my hand.

"Grace," he whispered.

He pressed my hand against his warm cheek, a hint of relief breaking through in his tone.

"You're okay... Thank God," he murmured.
