Chapter 2
A few minutes later, a man came rushing out with Charlotte in his arms, looking completely panicked.
I took a closer look. It was none other than Edward Chandler, VP of Lewis Group.
I'd only met him once before. I hated being in the spotlight, so I rarely went to the company, and naturally, none of them recognized me.
As he passed by, he shot me a dismissive glance. "I know you—you're Charlotte's maid, right? Mrs. Lewis just fainted and you're still standing here? Why haven't you called the driver to take her to the hospital?"
It took me a long moment to remember—oh right, my past life.
After Charlotte stole my identity, whenever people saw me, she'd tell them I was her maid. She'd say she pitied me and took me in out of the goodness of her heart.
And every time I tried to fight back, she'd threaten me with Samuel. "Vivian, think about Samuel."
I glanced at Charlotte in his arms. Her cheeks were practically glowing. Fainted, my ass.
Anyone could see she was faking it. Couldn't pay for her shopping spree, so she decided to fake a fainting spell instead.
I took my time getting into the family's luxury car, and just as Edward was about to load Charlotte inside, I slammed the door shut with a satisfying bang.
He stood outside, pounding on the window. "You're just a nobody, a maid, and you dare treat Mrs. Lewis like this? Just wait till she wakes up—she'll make you pay for this."
He went back to the car and rapped on the driver's window. "Open the door right now and get that servant out of there. We need to get Mrs. Lewis to the hospital—she's passed out."
The driver, Bill Jones, was married to the maid, Mary. In my previous life, the two of them had worked together with Charlotte to destroy me, and I'd died because of them.
Now, he opened the door quickly, just like before. He got out of the car and barked at me with that same aggressive tone. "Get out. I need to take Mrs. Lewis to the hospital."
I crossed my legs and rolled the window halfway down. "Are you serious right now?"
He froze for a second. He clearly hadn't expected me to talk back.
In my past life, after Damian left, I'd been completely dead inside. I didn't care about anything anymore, and I hadn't bothered fighting with any of them.
That had given them the impression they could walk all over me.
Edward's arms were obviously getting tired from holding Charlotte, and his irritation was starting to show.
Charlotte peeked one eye open while she was in his arms, then quickly squeezed it shut again.
The wealthy wives came outside and gathered around to watch the drama unfold. "Oh my, look at this maid—she's something else. Sitting in the car while Mrs. Lewis is stuck outside."
"I know, right? I heard Mrs. Lewis has this difficult servant who does whatever she wants. Apparently she's some kind of relative, so Mrs. Lewis can't really say anything."
"You think that's her?"
They went back and forth, each comment dripping with contempt for me.
One of the ladies who'd been quiet the whole time finally spoke up. "You should all tone it down a bit. That so-called servant doesn't seem ordinary to me, and did you see what she's wearing?"
The other ladies pressed against the car windows to get a better look at me. "Please, there's not a single brand label on her. It's obviously cheap knockoff stuff from some street market."
"Exactly. And look at Mrs. Lewis in that haute couture—it's this year's newest collection. You can't even buy it if you have the money."
I let out a quiet, cold laugh in my head. These women would never get the chance to wear this "street market knockoff" in their entire lives.
That same lady spoke up again, "You only recognize brand names. If you ask me, her clothes look like Master Lowell's private collection."
I couldn't help but glance at her a few more times. Not bad. Out of all these people, she was the only one who figured it out.
Private custom pieces weren't something just anyone was qualified to wear.
Edward was still making a scene. "Bill, drag her out of there right now. Don't let her delay Charlotte's treatment."
Bill listened to him and quickly opened my car door. "Get out, now. Call yourself a cab to get home."
This driver was biting the hand that fed him. I stepped out of the car, but as I did, my high heel came down hard on his toes. "Get lost."
His face flushed red as he shot back, "What did you just say? I'm Mrs. Lewis' driver. What gives you the right to kick me out?"
He was downright stubborn. Charlotte must've been paying them well these past two years to earn this kind of loyalty.
I brought my other heel down on his foot and watched him hop around in circles, clutching his injured toes and grimacing in pain.
