Chapter 4

I left the bathroom and drove to the care facility alone.

Mike, his eyes red, handed me a paper bag containing Wendy's personal effects.

"Would you like to see her one more time?" he asked, gesturing toward a small room at the end of the hallway, his voice heavy with sorrow.

My feet felt like they were made of lead, each step so heavy it made my heart ache.

I pushed open the door and saw a gurney in the center of the room.

The outline was so small, so frail.

I knew Wendy was lying there.
