Chapter 4
Andrew stepped in front of me, his voice low and urgent. "Grace, don't mess around with the baby."
"This isn't a joke," I replied.
"Try anything with my baby and see what happens." His voice was like a knife, making several people in the lobby stop in their tracks.
I looked up at him. "Your baby?"
Andrew gritted his teeth. "Grace, don't push me to make a scene right here."
I handed the medical file to the nurse. "Tell the doctor I want to terminate the pregnancy."
Andrew's face went pale.
Ainsley dropped the thermos, and soup spilled all over the floor.
She covered her mouth, her voice trembling. "Grace, how could you be so cruel? That's a life."
I looked at her. "When you were laughing last night, did it ever occur to you that it was a life?"
Andrew grabbed my shoulders. "Are you crazy? Because of something Ainsley said, you're going to kill our baby?"
Chloe shoved him aside. "Don't go blaming everything on what someone said. The real problem is you. You're not worthy to be a father."
Andrew pointed at me, the veins on the back of his hand bulging. "Grace, I'm telling you. If you step foot in there today, I swear I'll never sign the papers."
The doctor stepped out of the exam room, frowning at him. "She's an adult. It's up to her whether she wants to keep the pregnancy or not."
Andrew acted like he didn't hear a word. "I'm the father of this child."
The doctor's tone grew firmer. "You're her husband, not the owner of her body."
People around us started whispering.
"What's his deal?"
"His wife's pregnant, and he's still sticking up for some other girl? Seriously, how shameless can you get?"
Andrew's face twisted with embarrassment at all the whispers.
Ainsley burst into tears. "Drew, stop fighting, please. Grace's emotions are all over the place right now. She probably just lost control for a moment. Grace, take it out on me if you want. Don't hurt the baby, please."
She lunged at me, reaching out to grab me. I stepped back.
Her hand caught nothing, and she stumbled forward, her foot slipping in the spilled soup. She went down hard, landing right on the floor.
Andrew instantly crouched and tried to help her up. "Ainsley!"
Ainsley's face twisted in pain, but she still shot me a look. "Grace, I know you hate me, but how can you shove me like that?"
Chloe exploded, "You slipped all by yourself. You can check the footage. The whole thing's on camera in the hospital lobby."
Ainsley's sobs grew louder. "I'm not blaming you, Grace. Really, I'm not."
Andrew looked up at me like he could eat me alive. "Grace, you've really let me down."
I actually laughed.
He was helping Ainsley up after she fell, and said I let him down.
The nurse finally spoke up, "Look, the soup's all over the floor. She slipped, and that's on her. If you guys want to fight, take it outside. Don't mess up the hospital. There are other patients here."
Andrew felt embarrassed as he helped Ainsley up.
Ainsley bit her lip, tears falling one after another. "Andrew, let's go. Grace doesn't want to see me right now."
Andrew stood his ground. He stared me down. "Grace, you're not having that surgery today. We're going home. We need to talk."
I asked, "Talk about what?"
"We can talk about divorce, but the baby has to be born."
I looked at him. "Oh, so you want me to go through with this, so Ainsley can play mommy to my kid?"
That made him pause.
Ainsley shook her head right away. "Grace, why would you think that about me? I care about the baby. That's all."
