Chapter 5

Peter had traded the street for the supply closet. Same guy who once dropped three perps without breaking a sweat; now he smelled like menthol and paper cuts.

Peter was on supply duty now, alone in a closet restringing a push broom.

When he saw me, he let out a sigh. He said, "I knew that case would affect your whole life. I told your parents, 'Kids are innocent. Whatever you do, don't get the kids involved.'"

I didn't catch what he really meant. I just thought he was standing up for me.
