Chapter 7

There was silence on the other end of the line for a few seconds.

"What do you mean, buy out your half?"

"Exactly what it sounds like."

"Claire, you only left last night."

"I know."

"And you scheduled a home appraisal first thing this morning?"

I looked out at the hotel parking lot.

"Your mother is getting ready to rent out her house, and Lauren clearly isn't planning to leave."

"If they're going to live there long-term, I need to know what my half of the house is worth."

"I'm not responsible for supporting their lives."

Adam's breathing grew heavier.
