I was about to explain when Andrew's phone rang at just the right moment.

Through the phone came Sophie's tearful voice. "Andrew, it's so cold here by the river. If I jump, will I be someone you can never forget?"

I had never seen Andrew look so panicked. He gripped his phone, calling the police while trying to soothe Sophie. "Sophie, where are you? I'm on my way. I'll divorce Emma. Don't do anything rash."

He glanced at me with a complex expression, then he seized my arm and dragged me along behind him.
