For one second after I said the word divorce, no one moved.

Ryan stared at me as if I had spoken in a language he didn't know. Lily's crying softened into hiccups against his shoulder. Mara pressed one hand over her mouth, eyes already wet, already performing.

Emma shivered in my arms.

That was the only thing I cared about.

"Danielle," Ryan said under his breath. "Put her down. You're making this worse."

I looked at his arms.

He was still holding Lily.

"Look at your daughter," I said.

His jaw tightened. "I am looking."

"No. You're looking at me."
