Suddenly, Mom's face twisted with rage.

She smashed a bowl and then broke the toy castle she'd given me.

Her eyes were blazing with fury as she yelled, "Mandy, you're not just spoiled and always messing around. Now you're even lying."

I looked at her quietly.

After a long time, I finally spoke in a low voice, "Mom, your hands are shaking. What are you afraid of?"

Dad shot me a fierce glare. "How many times have I told you? Kids shouldn't lie or make things up!"
