Chapter 2
Once the seed of suspicion was planted, it couldn't help but slowly take root and grow.
Even though I never made any real effort to look into things, I still made a point of keeping my distance from Misty.
Three months ago, Misty got pregnant.
During that time, we barely had any sex at all.
When I met Misty's gaze, she looked completely calm and unfazed.
Misty said, "Miles, you remember that night you got wasted? Looks like we really hit the jackpot the first time.
"We're finally going to be parents."
If I did the math, it all pointed back to that night.
I was drunk that night, but I didn't black out.
When we got home, Misty was definitely in the mood.
But I was dead tired.
So I just pretended to be even more wasted than I really was.
Nothing happened between us that night.
My heart hit rock bottom.
I had my assistant look into it.
Just as I suspected, the child belonged to Bud.
Over the past few years, Misty and Bud had been getting closer.
Even though they were close, they always kept a distance at the office.
"Mr. Dennis, here's the info you wanted," my assistant said, passing over a thick envelope.
"Good job," I said.
He didn't reply—just kept scanning the room, his eyes darting here and there, ever vigilant.
Lately, I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching my every move.
Any time my plans had anything to do with Misty, someone would always know exactly where I'd be.
No matter how sudden my travel arrangements were, Misty would somehow already know about them.
Every time I was about to get close to the truth, somebody would wipe the slate clean.
None of this was normal.
I never made my schedule public.
For someone to intercept me so accurately and cover their tracks before I could even catch on, it could only mean there was a mole hiding close by me.
To find out who was spying on me, I had my assistant deliberately drop a bunch of fake leads as bait.
Once we figured out who the mole was, we kicked them out immediately.
After that, my assistant volunteered to be Misty's spy.
Unfortunately, Misty had no clue what was really going on.
The price she offered was ridiculously low.
I kept up the act, pretending I was totally clueless.
Everything Misty found out was exactly what I wanted her to know.
Even my assistant only took Misty's money because I told him to.
I told him to treat it as his bonus.
I went ahead and hired an exclusive security team, dropping a small fortune to keep myself covered.
Apart from drivers and bodyguards, the package even included covert investigative services as part of the deal.
I paid a price so high that it was way out of Misty and Bud's league.
I opened the envelope, and the stack of documents inside was thick as a phone book.
Every interaction between Misty and Bud over the past months had been meticulously tracked and laid out in detail.
I believed that this service was worth the price.
A mocking smile tugged at my lips.
I thought, 'Since they're so eager to play, I'll make sure we play by my rules.'
"Let's head home," I said.
"You got it, Boss," my assistant replied.
In a romantic suite at the hotel, Bud was snuggled up with Misty, his arms wrapped securely around her.
Misty's cheeks were rosy, so it was obvious that she had just had sex with Bud.
Bud gave a gentle, concerned look and said, "Are you okay, babe? We did get a bit wild. I hope the baby's alright."
He softly stroked Misty's belly in a protective, caring way.
Misty let out a playful giggle, totally leaning into Bud's gentle touch.
She was absolutely basking in all this tenderness.
Misty reassured him with a smile, "Don't worry, the doctor said our baby's perfectly healthy. Nights like these now and then aren't a problem at all.
"You don't think Miles is getting suspicious, do you? He's been busy lately, but I have this nagging feeling he's noticed something," Misty said.
Bud waved his phone around with a smug, almost gloating grin.
He leaned down and planted a soft kiss on Misty's belly.
Then he let out a cold laugh before speaking. "Relax. His most loyal assistant already switched teams ages ago.
"I've buried him in so much work lately that he won't have the bandwidth to worry about anything else for the next few months."
The moment Bud said that, Misty felt a weight lift off her shoulders.
She wanted to believe in Bud's plan, but deep down, she just couldn't shake that uneasy feeling.
"Don't slack off over there," she urged.
Bud was lazily toying with Misty's slender fingers, his voice calm and a touch smug.
"Relax, I've already won over a good chunk of the board," he assured her with easy confidence.
