A week later, my mother called again. Her tone was surprisingly pleasant. "Claire, I need to talk to you about something."

I was alerted. Whenever she sounded like that, trouble was brewing. "What is it?"

"About your apartment," my mother said. "The one you bought for your wedding. I want you to transfer the title to Leo."
