Chapter 2
I looked at both of them and suddenly laughed.
David probably thought I would do what I always did, come to him with tears in my eyes, demand an explanation.
And then, I would feel hurt and let it go.
But today, I was not putting up with it anymore.
Without another word, I raised my hand and slapped David hard across the face.
The sharp crack echoed through the room as David's head snapped to the side, and he stumbled back a few steps.
Without missing a beat, I grabbed the wine from the table and poured it right over his head.
The wine dripped down his hair and onto his expensive shirt, and David stood there, frozen.
The private room fell dead silent, followed by a collective gasp.
"Jessica, are you out of your mind?" David let out a low growl, his eyes bloodshot with fury.
Natalie shrieked and rushed over.
She frantically grabbed tissues to wipe David's face, her hand gently caressing his cheek with obvious concern.
When she turned to look at me, her eyes were full of venom. "Jessica, how could you do that to Mr. Foster? You are completely unreasonable."
I watched coldly as the scene unfolded, my stomach churning with disgust.
I stepped forward, staring straight at David. "This is the first and last time. If I ever hear any more rumors about me, don't blame me if I stop holding back."
David's face was dark, his chest heaving as he struggled to catch his breath. He didn't say a word.
I didn't spare them another glance and turned to leave.
But right then, Natalie's voice cut through the air, laced with spite. "Ms. Wynn, is that why you have such a bad temper? Are you still hung up on what happened all those years ago?"
She snuggled up to David, her tone dripping with smug satisfaction. "I heard you were assaulted back then. No wonder Mr. Foster says that even after all these years, he still cannot feel anything for you in bed.
"Back where I am from, girls like you are damaged goods. Mr. Foster is too kind to stay with you."
The air froze, and even the sound of breathing disappeared.
Everyone in the room stared at me in shock.
I stood frozen, my nails digging hard into my palm.
I turned back, utterly stunned, staring at the man I'd devoted ten years of my life to.
That was the darkest moment of my life, the wound I never dared to revisit.
And yet, David had the audacity to turn it into a joke, ruthlessly exposing it for everyone to see.
David's face went pale. He could not even look at me and frantically patted Natalie's shoulder, signaling her to stop.
My head buzzed, and I forced myself to fight off the wave of dizziness threatening to swallow me whole.
I turned around and marched back.
David saw that something was wrong and tried to stop me. "Jessica..."
I slapped his hand away and marched straight toward Natalie.
I swung my left arm in a wide arc and landed a loud, stinging slap right across Natalie's face.
Before Natalie could react, I backhanded her again, the blow landing harder.
I towered over her, my voice cold as ice. "Say it again, and next time, it'll be more than a slap."
Natalie clutched her face, tears finally streaming down as she collapsed into David's arms.
David pulled Natalie into his arms, glaring at me as he shouted, "Jessica. Have you lost your mind? Everything Natalie said was true, wasn't it? Because of your past, you think you can go around hitting people? There's seriously something wrong with you."
I listened to his accusations, so casual and self-righteous, and looked at the man who had once been by my side as I crawled out of the mire, only to stand there now defending another woman and lashing out at me.
It was like my heart was being crushed in someone's fist, squeezed tighter with every word.
The pain was so intense, it completely overshadowed my anger.
I felt my eyes burn and my nose sting.
But I bit down hard on my tongue, swallowing the humiliation and forcing the tears and humiliation back down.
"David." My voice was frighteningly calm. "From today on, we are done."
David opened his mouth, his Adam's apple bobbing as he tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come out.
After saying that, I looked at them one last time before turning and walking away.
