Chapter 4

I slipped out of the manor under the cover of night, clutching a small bundle as I made my way toward the side gate.

The gatekeeper was half asleep on his stool, and he rubbed his drowsy eyes when he noticed me. He sat up and asked, "Bit late for a stroll, Ma'am. Where are you off to?"

I forced a smile and said, "There is a festival in the village tonight. I thought I might go and enjoy the festivities."
