Chapter 3

The dishes from dinner still sat unwashed in the sink, a monument to my invisible labor, when Mark's voice boomed from the living room.

"Sarah! Get in here. You need to see this."

I dried my hands on the dish towel, my wedding ring catching on the frayed fabric. The diamonds Clara wore still burned in my memory—how they'd sparkled against her throat while my handmade scarf lay crumpled and forgotten.

"What is it?" I asked, stepping into the living room where Mark sat sprawled across the sofa, remote in hand. His family had finally left, taking their condescending smiles and Clara's lingering perfume with them.

"Channel 7's doing a feature on the city's top bakers," he said without looking at me. "I'm on in five minutes."

My stomach clenched. "You're on television?"

"Of course I am. The restaurant's been nominated for three awards this year." His chest puffed with pride. "They want to interview the head chef about our signature dessert."

Our signature dessert. The words twisted in my gut like a blade.

The commercial break ended, and suddenly Mark's face filled our television screen. He stood in the gleaming kitchen of his restaurant, wearing his pristine white chef's coat, every inch the successful culinary artist. But he wasn't alone.

Clara stood beside him, her blonde hair pulled back in an elegant chignon, wearing a black dress that probably cost more than my monthly allowance. She looked like she belonged there, like she'd always belonged there, her manicured hand resting possessively on Mark's arm.

"I'm here with Mark Williams, head chef at Meridian," the reporter's voice filled our living room, "and Clara Hutchinson, the inspiration behind their award-winning molten chocolate cake."

The world stopped spinning.

Inspiration. Behind my cake. My recipe.

On screen, Mark's arm slid around Clara's waist with practiced ease. "This dessert represents everything we stand for at Meridian," he said, his voice smooth as honey. "Sophistication, innovation, perfection."

"Tell us about the creation process," the reporter prompted.

Clara stepped forward, her smile radiant under the studio lights. "Well, it started with a vision. I wanted something that would capture the essence of luxury—rich, decadent, but with an element of surprise."

My hands began to shake. I gripped the back of the armchair, my knuckles white against the fabric.

"The technique is quite complex," Mark continued, his eyes never leaving Clara's face. "Getting that perfect molten center, the exact temperature, the timing—it took months of experimentation."

Months of experimentation. Months.

I had spent a year perfecting that recipe. A year of burnt batches, of cakes that were too dry or too wet, of centers that wouldn't stay molten or chocolate that wouldn't set properly. A year of Mark coming home to find me covered in flour and cocoa powder, testing and retesting until my fingers were stained brown and my back ached from bending over the oven.

"Clara's palate is extraordinary," Mark said, his voice warm with admiration. "She could taste things I couldn't even detect. Her suggestions were invaluable."

The camera zoomed in on a perfect slice of the cake, dark chocolate oozing from its center like liquid silk. My cake. My recipe. My hundred failed attempts before I finally got it right.

"It looks incredible," the reporter gushed. "What makes it so special?"

"It's all in the Belgian chocolate blend," Clara replied without missing a beat. "And the secret is adding just a touch of espresso to enhance the chocolate's depth. Most people don't realize that coffee brings out chocolate's natural complexity."

I had discovered that. I had spent weeks experimenting with different coffee ratios, different brewing methods, until I found the perfect balance. I had been the one to suggest Belgian chocolate instead of the cheaper alternatives Mark wanted to use.

"Clara is my muse," Mark said, pulling her closer. "She inspires everything I create."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I stumbled backward, my hip colliding with the coffee table.

"Mark," I whispered, but my voice was lost beneath the television's volume.

On screen, they were laughing together, sharing some private joke while the reporter wrapped up the segment. "The molten chocolate cake will be featured at next month's Culinary Excellence Awards, where Meridian is nominated for Restaurant of the Year."

The program cut to commercial, and Mark finally turned to look at me. His expression was cold, almost bored.

"Good interview, right?" he said, clicking off the television.

I stared at him, my chest heaving with rage and disbelief. "That's my recipe."

"What?"

"That cake. That's my recipe!" The words exploded from me like a dam bursting. "I spent a year perfecting it! A year! I tried it a hundred times before I got it right!"

Mark's laugh was sharp, cutting. "Your recipe? Sarah, you're a housewife. You bake cookies and casseroles. That's French patisserie."

"I developed every element of that cake!" My voice cracked with desperation. "The chocolate blend, the espresso ratio, the baking time, the temperature—everything!"

"You helped," Mark said dismissively, waving his hand like he was shooing away a fly. "I never said you didn't help. But creating a restaurant-quality dessert? That takes real culinary training."

"I have a degree in culinary arts!" The words tore from my throat. "I went to Johnson & Wales! I graduated summa cum laude!"

"That was fifteen years ago," Mark sneered. "Before you got comfortable playing house. Before you let yourself go."

His eyes raked over me with disgust—my stained apron, my unwashed hair, my hands still raw from cooking their Christmas dinner.

"Clara understands fine dining," he continued. "She has connections in the industry. She knows what sophisticated palates want. You?" He shook his head. "You make meatloaf and think you're Julia Child."

I felt something crack inside my chest, like ice breaking under pressure. "That was my creation. My work. My—"

"Shut up." Mark's voice turned vicious. "Just shut up before you embarrass yourself further. Who would believe that a suburban housewife developed an award-winning dessert? Clara has credibility. You have... what? Grocery store ingredients and a Kitchen-Aid mixer?"

The room spun around me. On the blank television screen, I could see my reflection—pale, shaking, invisible. While somewhere across the city, Clara wore my success like another diamond necklace, sparkling and beautiful and completely unearned.

"Nobody would believe you anyway," Mark said, his words falling like stones into still water. "So don't even think about making a scene. You'll only make yourself look pathetic."

He stood and stretched, as casual as if we'd been discussing the weather. "I'm going out. Don't wait up."

The front door slammed behind him, leaving me alone with the echo of my stolen dreams and the bitter taste of my own foolishness.
