Chapter 4

I carried the suitcase through the open front door before Mark could decide I was bluffing.

Emma followed with her backpack, sketchbook, and plastic bathroom basket.

“Claire,” Mark called behind us. “Don’t do this in front of Emma.”

I put the suitcase in the trunk.

“She was already in it.”

Mark stood in the doorway. Lisa was several feet behind him, still holding her coffee mug.

From the driveway, I could see Emma’s mattress against the hallway wall.

“You don’t need to leave,” Lisa said. “Mason and I can find somewhere else tonight.”
